A Living Laboratory for Sustainability

Cornell University supports research, scholarship, and the practical application of knowledge that address one of humankind's greatest challenges: achieving a sustainable world for all.

The university's specific commitment to campus sustainability was recently formalized in the new 2010-2015 Cornell University Strategic Plan. The plan calls for sustainability to be a guiding principle in all campus operations and specifically the implementation of the Climate Action Plan and Comprehensive Master Plan . For information on teaching, research, and outreach for sustainability visit the Cornell Sustainability Portal.

Progress in campus sustainability requires participation and innovation from every corner of campus. From the links below you can learn about the diverse efforts of student organizations, staff green teams, and the Cornell Assemblies' three sustainability committees. In particular, the Presidents Sustainable Campus Committee and the Sustainability Office, along with 10 President's Sustainable Campus Committee Focus Teams, play important roles in the coordination and support of these efforts.

The Sustainability Office works with students, staff and community members to catalyze Cornell's transformation into a sustainable campus, including its energy infrastructure. The Sustainability Office is a section within the Energy & Sustainability Department.

The Sustainability Focus Teams, assembled in 2010, develop program recommendations, assess progress and help implement policy recommendations in major operational areas related to sustainability. The teams are composed of staff from these operational areas, students and staff who represent key Cornell community groups, and faculty whose research interests intersect with sustainable campus endeavors.

Building Team

Cornell is taking steps to improve the sustainability performance of the campus buildings. Buildings are generally the largest user of energy and the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions on campuses. Buildings also use significant amounts of potable water. Cornell aims to design, build, and maintain buildings in ways that provide a safe and healthy indoor environment for inhabitants while simultaneously mitigating the building's impact on the outdoor environment.

Cornell is reducing energy consumption through conservation and efficiency, and switching to cleaner and renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermal, and low-impact hydropower. Implementing conservation measures and switching to renewable sources of energy can also help save money. Renewable energy generated locally and allow Cornell to support local economic development.

Cornell is engaged in building a more sustainable food system across New York State and the region. Cornell students grow organic food on campus, and Farm Services operates a large-scale composting facility on campus. Cornell uses food purchases to support their local economies; encourage safe, environmentally-friendly farming methods; and help alleviate poverty for farmers. Additional efforts are made to lower the environmental footprint of campus dining operations such as tray-less dining, reusable mugs, and compostable packaging.

Cornell is working to incorporate sustainability into staff, student, and faculty leadership development, human resources programs and policies, and campus community engagement. Sustainability engagement builds on the success of Cornell's long-standing commitments to diversity and fair compensation. Equipping students, faculty, and staff with the tools, knowledge, and motivation to adopt behavior changes that promote sustainability is an essential activity of a sustainable campus.

Cornell conserves water and strives to protect water quality in the regional watershed through land management, green building practices, and conservation education. Conservation and effective stormwater management are important in maintaining and protecting finite groundwater supplies. Water conservation and effective stormwater management also reduce the need for effluent discharge into local surface water supplies, which helps improve the health of local water ecosystems.
