Individually metering and displaying each building's resource use is instrumental to a sustainable campus. You can personally monitor your building's consumption and visualize the benefits of your efforts. The uses for the site are endless: inter-residence hall competitions, establishing a "Green Fund" system where utility savings are returned to department budgets, tracking the effects of energy conservation initiatives, and identifying high resource-use buildings, just to name a few.
Cornell University individually meters each facility's electricity, steam, natural gas, chilled water, potable water, and sewer use. This information is available to the public on the Facilities Services web site . These instructions are provided to help you fully utilize the site's capabilities.
- Go to Find Facility Information on the Facilities Services web site.
- Search for a specific building by:
- Location: navigate the map to first select the general region and then the specific building
- The building's name or part of name
- Facility or department code
- Or the campus organizational unit (e.g. Student Services, University Libraries, etc.)
- Once the building is selected, click on Building Costs located on the left side.
- From here, isolate specific Utility Costs (such as electricity, steam, sewer, etc.) or All Energy Utilities (includes electricity, steam, gas, and chilled water).
- Select either Use or Cost. For example, Use will display the electricity use in kWh, while Cost will display the electricity use in dollars. Cost is often varies with the utility's market price at the time.
- Select Total Value or Per Gross Area. Total Value will display the building's total use and Per Gross Area will display the use or cost per square foot. Per Gross Area is best for comparing two or more buildings.
- Select As Metered or BTUs depending on desired units
- Select Own Scale or Scale to all Facilities . Choose Own Scale to view the most detail.
- Click Show Report.
*** The report will show the past 5 years of actual monthly readings and an average of previous years in both graphical and tabular form.*** - To select a new building, click on the Search button the top of the page, then Find Information About Your Facility or use your browser's back button.
