Commute Distance
Most of Cornell University's campus community resides close to the university, with nearly all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a significant portion of faculty and staff, commuting within 10 miles. Those who travel farther may do so due to hybrid work arrangements or the high cost of living near the campus. Undergraduate students primarily walk to campus, faculty and staff primarily rely on personal motor vehicles. Among graduate students, the most common mode of transportation is the TCAT bus followed by personal vehicles and walking.
Cornell Transportation options are evolving. Cornell's Transportation Demand Management Program (TDMP) aims to reduce the number of vehicles on campus by encouraging alternative commuting methods. The university offers incentives for using public transit, walking, biking, and carpooling. Their goals include reducing single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs), promoting multimodal and transit options, cutting carbon emissions, and enhancing infrastructure to support walking and biking. Cornell is exploring solar canopies and electric vehicle charging infrastructure opportunities with internal staff and facilities initiatives.
