Cornell Campus Sustainability Office | Spring 2018
For the seventh consecutive year, Cornell University has received a Gold Rating from AASHE STARS.Cornell is one of just over 100 campuses to achieve a Gold ranking this year, and did so using the most stringent measurement methodology available.
The rating system encompasses many different sustainability initiatives at Cornell in the areas of governance and finance, climate, campus, community, academics, and innovation. Details can be reviewed in the the report card, and compared to other schools who use this reporting system.
Specific areas where Cornell made substantial improvements include Water, Buildings, and Campus Engagement:
Water
Water use was significantly reduced, partially due to initiatives taken during the drought. Some of these water saving changes include more efficient shower heads and a grey water system for irrigation in the Physical Science Building.
Buildings
Cornell improved building operations and maintenance by reporting their Green Cleaning Program which ensures that Cornell uses "Green Seal Certified" cleaning products to ensure that safe and sustainable products are being used. Green Cleaning practices include improving air quality by reducing the amount of contaminants in the air, preserving infrastructure by extending the life of the carpeting, hard floor surfaces and other materials through cleaning products, and ensuring products are Green Seal certified.
Campus Engagement
Cornell University improved this area with programs like Anabel's Grocery. Anabel's Grocery, contributing to both Innovation and Campus Engagement initiatives, provides affordable and convenient groceries to Cornell Students. Working to improve the problem of food insecurity on campus, Anabel's Grocery provides food at less expensive prices than most grocery stores and is located right on campus.
Cornell was previously recognized in the 2017 AASHE STARS Report for contributions in Energy, placing second the county (tied with several other institutions) for leading efforts in Coordination and Planning, and 4th in the country for Diversity & Affordability.
