Sustainability events slated for Bring Your Child to Work Day on April 23rd

Have a budding environmentalist or sustainability champion in your family?  The Campus Sustainability Office and staff in Facilities & Campus Services are hosting several events at Bring Your Child to Work Day this Spring.  Please read the event details carefully to ensure these activities are appropriate for your family, and complete any necessary sign-up forms. 

Session details will be provided and updated on the Human Resources Website: 2020 Bring Your Child to Work Day.  Registration is required.  Registration opens March 29th. 

Solar Farm Tour at the Cascadilla Community Solar Farm

1:30pm - 3:00pm | All Ages

Hop on a bus from campus for a narrated spin around the new Cascadilla Community Solar Farm at Cornell – learn about the project and Cornell’s plan to become a carbon neutral campus. Disembark at the solar farm to meet the sheep that keep the vegetation from shading the panels, see solar PV equipment up close, and learn about community solar from the Solar Farms NY team. Complete a scavenger hunt to earn a Sustainable Cornell spork!

Get a Sporkful of Cornell Ice Cream & Learn to Recycle

9:30 - 10:30 and 11:00 -12:00 | All Ages

I scream for ice cream, and single-stream recycling! Do you know how to properly sort your trash and recycling? After you learn how to make ice cream, and had a taste with a Sustainable Cornell spork, learn where your waste goes with the divert-it game that teaches us how to identify items for recycling, compost, and the landfill in a fun and interactive session.  

Power it Up!

9:30am - 10:30am  | Ages 12-16 years

Did you know that Cornell makes its own electricity and heat? Take a tour of the facility where this magic happens and learn about how Cornell turns heat into energy and keeps the lights on and the experiments going. 

A Beautiful Landscape

1:30 - 2:30pm  | Ages 12-16 years

Join Cornell’s Planners and Landscape Architect to learn about how the topography of a site impacts the decisions made around landscaping.  Hear about (and see)  the amazing hidden landscapes and gardens on the Cornell campus then construct your own site with trees, boulders, and a water feature!

Carpentry, It’s for the Birds! 
9:00am - 10:00am & 11:00am - 12:00pm | Ages 8 - 14 years old 

Build a beautiful habitat for birds in your backyard with the Carpenter Shop. If you like to Explore and Create then come visit the Cornell Carpenter Workshop. Get a tour of the shop and get ready to gear up to build your very own bird house with a professional carpenter.

Plant a Tree (The Wonder of Plants)

11:00am - 12:00pm | All Ages

Plant a tree and learn about trees/plants! Learn about how to help trees grow and get seeds of your very own to plant at home.  This event occurs every year and allows participants to plant a tree that will stay on the Cornell campus for years to come.

Map Pursuit

9:30 - 10:30 and 11:00 -12:00 | Ages 8 - 12

Have you ever wondered about the environment around you? The trees, the sidewalks, the pipes that bring us water, and the way it all comes together to provide us information? – learn about the photos, maps, and drones that help Cornell operate and plan for the future! Step outside and find objects in the campus environment that you never thought to look for! Discover the hidden pipes running throughout campus, information about buildings and trees, and understand how maps bring different worlds together.
